Monterey Bay Aquarium Great White Shark
In late August, 2007, the Monterey Bay Aquarium great white shark exhibit was open. The young male shark can be seen in the Outer Bay exhibit. He was was accidentally caught up in some commercial fishing gear. There have been two other sharks on exhibit in the past few years, but both were returned to the wild when it was deemed safe. This one will also be released before he gets too big. The new shark gets a daily lunch of vitamin stuffed salmon steaks. The Outer Bay exhibit holds a million gallons of water and is meant to recreate the open ocean waters. Other fish in the exhibit which share space with the new great white include other types of sharks, tunas, barracudas and sea turtles. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is also engaged in a white shark research project. They tag young sharks which are accidentally caught by commercial fishermen, (in Southern California), then monitor their migration and movements.
